Myanmar rebel group, junta ink ceasefire agreement

(MENAFN) A major ethnic armed group in Myanmar announced on Wednesday that it has reached a ceasefire agreement with the military junta ahead of the country’s upcoming general elections.

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) said on Telegram that the truce was achieved during Chinese-mediated peace talks, with several rounds of discussions held, including sessions on Monday and Tuesday in Kunming, southern China.

No official statement has been released by the junta regarding the latest ceasefire.

Under the agreement, the TNLA will transfer control of Mogoke in Mandalay and Mongmit in Shan State to the junta, in exchange for a halt to bombing in areas under the rebel group’s control.

The new truce follows months after the junta declared a ceasefire in response to a powerful earthquake in late March that killed hundreds of people.

The ceasefire comes as the military regime prepares for Myanmar’s first general elections since the February 2021 coup. The vote will take place in two phases: the first on December 28 and the second on January 11 next year. The official campaign period for registered political parties began recently and will close on December 26, just two days before the first round of voting.

According to officials, phase one will cover 102 townships, while the remaining 100 townships will vote in phase two. The last general elections, held in November 2020, were won by the National League for Democracy, which was overthrown in the military coup, plunging the country into over four years of emergency rule.

Since the coup, nearly 72,422 people have reportedly been killed in Myanmar, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
