Cameroon Threatens Legal Action Against Opposition Leader
(MENAFN) Cameroon's Interior Minister, Paul Atanga Nji, pledged on Tuesday to pursue legal measures against leading opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary, accusing him of promoting violence amid unrest following the recent election, according to reports from various media outlets.
Authorities are gathering social media posts and videos considered “false” and harmful to the “established order,” intending to prosecute those responsible.
Nji stated at a press briefing in Yaounde, according to a website, that this would apply “just like candidate Issa Tchiroma and his affiliates, who are responsible for an insurrectional plan aimed at plunging the country into chaos.”
The Constitutional Council announced results on Monday showing that President Paul Biya had won reelection with 53.66% of the vote, securing an eighth term and extending his 43-year tenure as the world's oldest sitting president.
Opposition leader Tchiroma has claimed victory in the Oct. 12 vote.
Following his call for demonstrations on Sunday, his supporters faced confrontations with security forces before the official announcement, resulting in at least four civilian fatalities.
Nji asserted that the security situation remained under control despite isolated incidents, emphasizing that the electoral process concluded with the Constitutional Council's official results declaration.
