Trump Vows Efforts for Peace Between North, South Koreans
Previous US administrations have attempted to curb North Korea’s unauthorized ballistic missile and nuclear programs, while also seeking to enhance relations on the Korean Peninsula. Although progress on these longstanding issues has been limited, Trump expressed confidence that he will ultimately secure a peace agreement for the divided region.
Speaking to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Trump recognized that the Koreas technically remain in a state of war following the 1953 armistice that paused open hostilities, but commented: "We'll see what we can do to get that all straightened out."
Trump added, "We'll work very hard with Kim Jong Un and with everybody on getting things straightened out, because that makes sense," during brief remarks to reporters ahead of his meeting with Lee.
He further stated, "It's common sense that that should work out, and I feel certain that it will, may take a little time, you have to have a little patience, but I feel absolutely certain that it will."
During his first term, Trump held three meetings with Kim Jong Un, including a notable 2019 encounter in the demilitarized zone separating the North and South, marking the first occasion a US president stepped onto North Korean soil.
