BBC chair apologizes over Trump’s documentary amid legal threats
Shah emphasized that the BBC’s “DNA and culture” are rooted in impartiality, while acknowledging that there were “real issues” that needed addressing. The 2024 documentary was criticized for editing together two segments of Trump’s speech in a way that “did give the impression of a direct call for violent action,” specifically related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
In a letter to lawmakers on parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Shah admitted, “in hindsight, it would’ve been better to act earlier” and that the BBC “should have taken a more formal position on it.”
Regarding Trump’s response, Shah confirmed that the broadcaster had received a letter from the former president threatening legal action over the program. “We have received communication from President Trump and his people, and we are now considering how to reply to him,” Shah said. “I do not know yet if he is suing the BBC — but he’s a litigious fellow, so we should be prepared for all outcomes.”
Trump has a history of legally challenging reports he disputes, including actions against ABC and CBS in the U.S., which resulted in financial settlements and other adjustments.
Shah rejected claims that the BBC had “swept the issue under the carpet,” stressing that lessons have been learned from the incident. The controversy follows the resignations of BBC Director General Tim Davie and News CEO Deborah Turness on Sunday night. A leaked memo from former independent adviser Michael Prescott also criticized the documentary’s editing choices.
Shah stated it was not the board’s role to determine executive positions but expressed disappointment over Davie’s resignation: “I did not want to lose Tim Davie, nor did any member of the board. My job now is to ensure a smooth transition, and Tim will help with this.”
He added that he would not resign, emphasizing his duty “to represent the public and ensure the journalism is impartial.”
