Irish PM Announces Short-Term Measures to Ease Rising Energy Costs

(MENAFN) Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin announced on Monday that his government plans to introduce immediate, targeted measures to relieve citizens from rising energy prices driven by ongoing tensions in the Middle East, according to reports.

Speaking at a press briefing at a Dublin housing development, Martin stated, "We will be looking at, first of all, an immediate set of measures, short-term, targeted in terms of the immediate pressures on the public." He did not provide specifics, but discussions among coalition leaders are expected to include options such as a tax rebate scheme, a double fuel allowance payment, and reductions in excise duties to lower fuel prices at the pumps.

Addressing concerns from the opposition Sinn Fein party regarding the potential impact of a tax rebate for haulers on excise reductions for other motorists, Martin emphasized that the measures would focus on immediate relief. On broader energy policies, he added that the government is considering initiatives related to "energy efficiency," including potential incentives for solar power or adjustments to motorway speed limits.

Regional hostilities have intensified since February 28, when US and Israeli forces launched a joint offensive on Iran, resulting in over 1,340 deaths, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with repeated drone and missile strikes against Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US military assets, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump stated on Monday that he had ordered a five-day postponement of all strikes on Iranian energy and power infrastructure, citing “very good and productive” discussions with Tehran over the preceding two days.
